About the Department
The Department of Urban & Regional Planning at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), within the School of Environmental Technology, is dedicated to developing competent planners capable of designing, managing, and improving urban and regional environments for sustainable development. Our department produces graduates with expertise in spatial planning, land use management, and regional development.
Urban and Regional Planning is the discipline of designing and managing the spatial organization of human activities and the physical environment at local, urban, and regional scales. Our comprehensive curriculum integrates planning theory and practice, land use planning and policy, transportation planning and design, housing and human settlements, economic development and management, environmental planning and sustainability, GIS applications in planning, and community participation and stakeholder engagement. Students develop expertise in planning design, policy analysis, spatial data analysis, project evaluation, and using modern planning tools.
The department features modern planning studios and laboratories equipped with computers for design and analysis, GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS), CAD and design tools, and planning visualization systems. Our curriculum is accredited by the Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC) and aligned with international planning standards. We maintain active collaborations with government planning agencies, consulting firms, NGOs, and international organizations, providing students with internship opportunities and exposure to real planning projects.
Graduates of Urban & Regional Planning are highly sought-after professionals in government, consulting, development, and international organizations. They work as urban planners, regional development planners, GIS planners, transportation planners, urban designers, housing specialists, and planning consultants. Admission Requirements
UTME Requirements (5-Year Program)
- Minimum UTME score as set by JAMB and FUTA
- Subject combination: English Language, Mathematics, and Physics/Social Science
- Five O'Level credit passes in no more than two sittings
- O'Level credits must include: English, Mathematics, and three other subjects
Direct Entry Requirements (4-Year Program)
- A'Level passes in at least two subjects (minimum grade C)
- ND Upper Credit in Urban Planning, Estate Management, or related discipline
- HND in Urban Planning, Architecture, or related field
- Plus O'Level requirements as stated above
