About the Department
The Department of Surveying & Geoinformatics at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), within the School of Environmental Technology, is dedicated to developing skilled surveying and geoinformatics professionals capable of accurately measuring, mapping, and analyzing spatial data to support development projects and environmental management. Our department produces graduates with expertise in conventional surveying methods and modern geospatial technologies.
Surveying and Geoinformatics is the discipline of collecting, processing, and analyzing spatial data from the Earth's surface using instruments, computational methods, and geospatial technologies. Our comprehensive curriculum integrates cadastral surveying, geodetic surveying, topographic surveying, photogrammetry and remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), global navigation satellite systems (GNSS/GPS), geospatial database design, and computational surveying. Students develop expertise in field surveying techniques, coordinate systems and transformations, spatial data analysis, cartographic production, and application of modern surveying technologies.
The department features modern surveying laboratories equipped with theodolites, levels, total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, computers for GIS and CAD, and field surveying equipment. Our curriculum is accredited by the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) and aligned with international geomatics standards. We maintain active collaborations with government agencies, engineering firms, construction companies, and international organizations, providing students with opportunities to gain practical experience in real surveying and mapping projects.
Graduates of Surveying & Geoinformatics are highly sought-after professionals in land administration, urban planning, construction, infrastructure development, mining, and environmental management. They work as surveyors, GIS specialists, cartographers, geodesists, and geospatial consultants. Admission Requirements
UTME Requirements (5-Year Program)
- Minimum UTME score as set by JAMB and FUTA
- Subject combination: English Language, Mathematics, and Physics
- Five O'Level credit passes in no more than two sittings
- O'Level credits must include: English, Mathematics, Physics, and two other subjects
Direct Entry Requirements (4-Year Program)
- A'Level passes in Mathematics and Physics (minimum grade C)
- ND Upper Credit in Surveying, Geoinformatics, or related discipline
- HND in Surveying or related technology field
- Plus O'Level requirements as stated above
