About the Department
The Department of Public Health at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), within the School of Basic Medical Sciences, is committed to developing competent public health professionals capable of promoting population health, preventing diseases, protecting the environment, and improving health outcomes through evidence-based interventions. Our department trains professionals who apply scientific approaches to addressing health challenges in communities and populations.
Public Health is the science and art of promoting health, preventing disease, and prolonging life through organized community efforts. Our comprehensive curriculum integrates epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health promotion, community health nursing, health policy, health administration, and research methods. Students develop expertise in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, epidemiological research, health program planning and evaluation, health education, and community-based interventions.
The department features modern facilities including epidemiological laboratories, computer facilities for data analysis, biostatistics resources, and partnerships with health ministries, NGOs, and international health organizations. We maintain active collaborations with community health centers, primary healthcare facilities, government health agencies, and global health programs, providing students with practical experience in disease surveillance, community health assessment, and health intervention implementation.
Graduates of Public Health are highly valued professionals in government health agencies, international organizations, NGOs, research institutions, and health promotion organizations. They work as epidemiologists, disease surveillance officers, health educators, community health workers, environmental health specialists, and health policy analysts. Our alumni contribute significantly to improving population health, controlling disease outbreaks, and strengthening health systems across Nigeria and globally.
