About the Department

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), within the School of Basic Medical Sciences, is dedicated to training highly skilled and professional medical laboratory scientists capable of providing accurate diagnostic services to patients. Our department produces internationally recognized medical laboratory professionals who contribute significantly to healthcare delivery and disease management across Nigeria and beyond.

Medical Laboratory Science is a healthcare discipline that involves the analysis and interpretation of clinical specimens to diagnose, monitor, and prevent disease. Our comprehensive curriculum integrates basic medical sciences, specialized laboratory disciplines, clinical skills, and research methodologies. Students develop expertise in clinical chemistry, hematology, medical microbiology, histopathology, immunology, parasitology, and blood transfusion science through both theoretical learning and extensive practical laboratory experience.

The department features fully equipped diagnostic laboratories with modern analytical equipment, microscopes, automated analyzers, and specialized instrumentation. We maintain strong partnerships with teaching hospitals, diagnostic centers, and research institutions, providing students with clinical postings, internship opportunities, and exposure to operational laboratory environments. Students gain practical experience in specimen collection, preparation, analysis, and reporting under professional supervision.

Graduates of Medical Laboratory Science are highly sought healthcare professionals working in hospital laboratories, diagnostic centers, blood banks, research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and public health organizations. They excel as clinical laboratory scientists, quality assurance specialists, infection control specialists, and laboratory managers. Our alumni play critical roles in disease diagnosis, patient management, and public health initiatives, contributing to improved healthcare outcomes and wellbeing of populations nationwide.
