About the Department

The Department of Microbiology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), within the School of Life Sciences, is dedicated to advancing knowledge of microorganisms and their diverse applications in human health, agriculture, industry, and environmental management. Our department trains highly skilled microbiologists equipped to address challenges in healthcare, food security, biotechnology innovation, and environmental sustainability through cutting-edge research and practical laboratory experience.

Microbiology is the comprehensive study of microorganisms—bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and archaea—and their structure, genetics, ecology, physiology, and relationships with other organisms and the environment. Our curriculum integrates theoretical understanding with hands-on laboratory practice, emphasizing the diversity and function of microorganisms. Students gain expertise in microbial identification, culture techniques, genetic analysis, infection mechanisms, pharmaceutical applications, food safety, environmental bioremediation, and biotechnological innovation.

Admission Requirements

UTME Requirements

  • Minimum UTME score as set by JAMB and FUTA
  • Subject combination: English Language, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Mathematics
  • Five O'Level credit passes in no more than two sittings
  • O'Level credits must include: English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Mathematics

Direct Entry Requirements (200 Level)

  • A'Level passes in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology (minimum grade C)
  • IJMBE Certificate with credits in relevant science subjects
  • GCE Advanced Level qualifications in science disciplines
  • Plus O'Level requirements as stated above
