About the Department

The Department of Medical Biochemistry at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), through the School of Basic Medical Sciences (SBMS), is dedicated to advancing understanding of the molecular and chemical processes underlying human health and disease. Our department combines rigorous biochemical science with medical applications, producing graduates who contribute significantly to biomedical research, pharmaceutical development, clinical diagnostics, and healthcare innovation.

Medical Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes that occur within living organisms, with emphasis on their application to human health and disease prevention. Our comprehensive curriculum covers biomolecular structure and function, metabolic pathways, enzyme kinetics, cellular signaling, clinical biochemistry, molecular pathology, and biotechnological applications. Admission Requirements

UTME Requirements

  • Minimum UTME score as set by JAMB and FUTA
  • Subject combination: English Language, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Mathematics
  • Five O'Level credit passes in no more than two sittings
  • O'Level credits must include: English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Mathematics

Direct Entry Requirements (200 Level)

  • A'Level passes in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology (minimum grade C)
  • IJMBE Certificate with credits in relevant science subjects
  • GCE Advanced Level qualifications in science disciplines
  • Plus O'Level requirements as stated above
