About the Department
The Department of Medicine and Surgery at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), through the School of Basic Medical Sciences (SBMS) within the College of Health Sciences, is dedicated to training highly skilled, compassionate, and ethical physicians and surgeons capable of delivering excellent patient care. The department integrates rigorous scientific education with comprehensive clinical training to produce medical professionals equipped to address diverse health challenges in Nigeria and globally.
Medicine and Surgery encompasses the art and science of diagnosing, treating, and preventing human disease through medical and surgical interventions. The MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) program provides comprehensive education spanning basic medical sciences, pre-clinical studies, clinical disciplines, and practical clinical exposure. Students develop expertise in internal medicine, surgical procedures, obstetrics, pediatrics, pathology, pharmacology, community health, and diagnostic medicine through integrated coursework, problem-based learning, clinical rotations, and bedside teaching.
The department features state-of-the-art medical education facilities including anatomy dissection laboratories with cadaveric material, histology and pathology laboratories, clinical simulation centers with high-fidelity mannequins, teaching hospitals with ward facilities for clinical training, and diagnostic imaging centers. We maintain partnerships with leading teaching hospitals, research institutions, and international medical organizations, providing students with world-class clinical training, research opportunities, and exposure to global medical practices.

Admission Requirements
UTME Requirements
- Minimum UTME score of 200+
- Subject combination: English Language, Chemistry, Physics, Biology
- Five O'Level credit passes in no more than two sittings
- O'Level credits must include: English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology
- Pass in Medical Registration Examination (NREC) or equivalent
Direct Entry Requirements
- A'Level passes in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology (minimum grade C)
- IJMBE Certificate with credits in three science subjects
- GCE Advanced Level with credits in relevant subjects
- Plus O'Level requirements as stated above
- Entry into 200 Level of MBBS program
