About the Department
The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is a premier center for fisheries science and aquaculture education and research within the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT). Our department is dedicated to producing skilled professionals capable of sustainable management of aquatic resources, innovative fish production through advanced aquaculture techniques, and ensuring food security through fish farming and capture fisheries.
Fisheries and Aquaculture encompasses the science and management of wild fish populations, and the culture of fish and other aquatic organisms for food production and economic development. Our comprehensive curriculum covers fish biology and ecology, aquaculture systems and techniques, hatchery management, fish nutrition and feed production, fish health and disease management, water quality management, capture fisheries, post-harvest technology, and fisheries economics. Students develop strong technical competencies through intensive theoretical study combined with practical hands-on training in aquaculture operations, hatchery management, and SIWES industrial experience.
The department emphasizes practical learning with modern aquaculture infrastructure including fish ponds, hatcheries, recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), holding tanks, laboratory facilities, and feed production units. We maintain strategic partnerships with fisheries research institutes (NIOMR, FRIN), aquaculture companies, fish hatcheries, and government fisheries agencies, providing students with hands-on training and research opportunities. Our faculty members conduct cutting-edge research in aquaculture production, fish nutrition, fish health, environmental management, and sustainable fisheries development.
Our graduates are highly sought professionals in the aquaculture and fisheries sectors. They demonstrate proficiency in fish production technology, hatchery operations, feed management, fish health monitoring, and fisheries administration. Admission Requirements
UTME Requirements
- Minimum UTME score of 160-180+
- Subject combination: English Language, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, Mathematics/Physics
- Five O'Level credits in two sittings maximum
- Credit passes must include: English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, and at least a pass in Physics
Direct Entry Requirements (200 Level)
- Two A'Level passes at credit level in Chemistry and one of Biology/Botany/Agricultural Science/Physics
- ND/OND upper credit from recognized Polytechnics and Colleges in Fisheries/Aquaculture or related disciplines
- HND lower credit or higher in relevant agricultural or fisheries fields
- Plus O'Level requirements as stated above
