About the Department

The Department of Chemistry at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is a premier center for chemistry education and research within the School of Physical Sciences (SPS). Our department is dedicated to fostering excellence in chemistry education and developing innovative research that advances scientific knowledge and solves real-world problems affecting Nigeria and the world.

Chemistry is the study of matter, its properties, reactions, and transformations. Our comprehensive curriculum encompasses organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, and environmental chemistry. Students develop strong theoretical foundations and practical skills through intensive coursework, laboratory experiments, and research projects that prepare them for diverse careers in industry, academia, healthcare, and environmental sectors.

The department emphasizes hands-on learning with modern laboratory equipment including spectroscopy instruments, chromatography systems, analytical balances, and thermal analysis equipment. We maintain strong connections with pharmaceutical companies, food industries, environmental agencies, and research institutions, providing students with industrial exposure through SIWES and collaborative research initiatives. Our faculty members are actively engaged in research on green chemistry, analytical methods, materials science, and environmental sustainability.

Our graduates are recognized for their strong analytical skills, problem-solving ability, and expertise in chemistry. They demonstrate proficiency in compound synthesis, analysis, characterization, and quality control. Admission Requirements

UTME Requirements

  • Minimum UTME score of 160-180+
  • Subject combination: English, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics/Biology
  • Five O'Level credits in two sittings maximum
  • Credit passes must include: English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology

Direct Entry Requirements

  • Two A'Level passes in Chemistry and any one of Physics, Mathematics, or Biology
  • ND/HND upper credit in Science Laboratory Technology or related field
  • NCE merit in Chemistry and relevant subject
  • Plus O'Level requirements as stated above
