About the Department

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is a premier center for chemical engineering education and research within the School of Infrastructure, Minerals and Manufacturing Engineering (SIMME). Our department is dedicated to developing innovative solutions to industrial challenges and producing highly skilled professionals who will drive Nigeria's industrial growth through technological advancement.

Chemical Engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with designing and operating large-scale industrial processes that convert raw materials into valuable products. Our comprehensive curriculum integrates core engineering principles including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, chemical reaction engineering, and process design. Students gain expertise in process development, optimization, and scale-up through intensive theoretical coursework and extensive laboratory practical work.

The department emphasizes hands-on learning with state-of-the-art equipment including distillation columns, bioreactors, heat exchangers, and pilot-scale reactors. We maintain strong linkages with oil and gas companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, food processing industries, and chemical plants, providing students with real-world industrial exposure through SIWES and collaborative research projects. Our faculty members are actively engaged in research on sustainable processes, environmental remediation, and advanced materials.

Our graduates are recognized globally for their expertise in process engineering and industrial problem-solving. They demonstrate proficiency in designing efficient processes, optimizing production systems, and implementing sustainable technologies. Graduates pursue careers in oil and gas refineries, pharmaceutical companies, food processing facilities, chemical manufacturers, environmental agencies, and consultancies, significantly contributing to Nigeria's industrialization and economic development.
