About the Department

The Department of Biology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is a premier center for biological education and research within the School of Life Sciences (SLS). Our department is dedicated to exploring the fundamental principles of life, from the molecular level to ecosystems, and training the next generation of biologists who will advance scientific knowledge and address global challenges in health, environment, and sustainability.

Biology is the scientific study of living organisms and their interactions with each other and their environments. Our comprehensive curriculum integrates cell biology, genetics, physiology, ecology, botany, zoology, and evolutionary biology. Students engage in intensive laboratory work, field courses, research projects, and industrial training to develop both theoretical understanding and practical skills essential for careers in biological sciences.

The department emphasizes research-driven learning, modern instrumentation, and hands-on experience with cutting-edge biological techniques. We leverage state-of-the-art equipment including compound and stereo microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, and molecular biology tools. Strong collaborative links with research institutions, conservation organizations, and industries provide students with real-world experience and professional development opportunities.

Our graduates are recognized for their scientific rigor, critical thinking, and ability to solve complex biological problems. They pursue careers in research institutions, healthcare, environmental agencies, conservation organizations, biotechnology firms, and academic institutions. Upon completing their degree, graduates are equipped to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria's scientific and environmental development.
