About the Department
The Department of Biochemistry at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is a premier center for biochemical education and research within the School of Life Sciences (SLS). Our department is dedicated to training the next generation of biochemists who will advance our understanding of life processes at the molecular level and contribute to healthcare, agriculture, and industrial development.
Biochemistry is the science that studies life processes at the molecular level, exploring the chemistry of living organisms. Our comprehensive curriculum integrates biomolecular structure and function, enzymology, intermediary metabolism, molecular biology, biotechnology, clinical diagnostics, and toxicology. Students engage in intensive laboratory work, research projects, and practical training to develop both theoretical understanding and hands-on skills essential for scientific careers.
The department emphasizes research-based learning, modern instrumentation, and exposure to cutting-edge biochemical techniques. We leverage state-of-the-art equipment including spectrophotometers, centrifuges, chromatography systems, PCR machines, and electrophoresis units. Admission Requirements
UTME Requirements
- Minimum UTME score of 180+
- Subject combination: English, Chemistry, Biology, Physics/Mathematics
- Five O'Level credits including English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics
- Credits obtainable in maximum of two sittings
Direct Entry Requirements
- Two A'Level passes in Chemistry and Biology
- ND/HND upper credit in Science Laboratory Technology or related field
- JUPEB, IJMB passes in Chemistry and Biology
- Plus O'Level requirements as stated above
