About the Department

The Department of Architecture at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is a premier center for architectural education, research, and innovation within the School of Environmental Technology (SET). Our program emphasizes sustainable and innovative architectural designs, preparing graduates to shape the built environment with creativity, technical competence, and environmental responsibility.

Architecture combines art and science to design buildings and spaces that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and responsive to human needs. Our comprehensive curriculum integrates architectural design, building technology, structural systems, history of architecture, sustainable design, and digital modeling. Students engage in intensive studio work, hands-on projects, and design critiques to develop practical skills and build a strong design portfolio.

The department emphasizes design studio culture, where students learn through making, building their designs whilst developing an environmentally responsible attitude. We leverage modern Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies, 3D visualization, and digital fabrication methods. Our strong collaborative links with architectural practices provide students with real-world exposure and professional development opportunities.

Our graduates are recognized for their creativity, technical proficiency, and innovative approach to solving architectural challenges. They pursue careers with architectural firms, construction companies, government agencies, real estate development firms, and many establish their own practices. Upon registration with the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) and ARCON, graduates can legally practice architecture in Nigeria and contribute to shaping sustainable built environments.

Professional Registration

To legally practice architecture in Nigeria, graduates must register with professional bodies:

Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA)

The NIA is the professional body for architects in Nigeria, founded on April 1, 1960. It has approximately 6,000 members across 32 state chapters.

  • Full Membership - After Professional Practice Exam
  • Fellowship (FNIA) - Distinguished practitioners

ARCON Registration

The Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) is the statutory body that regulates architectural practice in Nigeria.

  • Complete accredited architecture degree
  • 2+ years post-qualification experience
  • Pass NIA Professional Practice Examination
  • Registration enables legal practice

Admission Requirements

UTME Requirements

  • Minimum UTME score of 180+
  • Subject combination: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry (or Geography/Technical Drawing)
  • Five O'Level credits including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and any other relevant subject
  • Credits obtainable in maximum of two sittings

Direct Entry Requirements

  • Two A'Level passes in Mathematics/Physics and Chemistry/Geography/Fine Arts
  • ND/HND upper credit in Architecture or related field
  • JUPEB, IJMB, or Cambridge A'Level accepted
  • Plus O'Level requirements as stated above
